Good architecture rarely arrives fully formed. It is shaped through conversation, sketched out, tested against the realities of a site, and refined stage by stage until it becomes something that can actually be built. At Nook, we believe the process matters just as much as the finished result, because a clear, collaborative approach is what turns a good idea into a building that stands the test of time.
Here is a look at how we work, from that very first conversation through to handing over a completed project.
A brief tells us what you want. We want to understand why you want it.
Getting to the heart of your motivations and your goals is where the most interesting work happens. That deeper understanding often unlocks ideas and approaches you had not considered, and it allows us to design something genuinely tailored to you rather than a version of what we have done before. The more we understand about your project, the better placed we are to make it work harder for you.
Our early concepts start as hand-drawn sketches. It is quick, it is creative, and it keeps the focus on ideas rather than software.
Working this way lets us balance your brief against site constraints and planning policy from the very outset, exploring options freely before committing to a direction. Sketching is also a great way to share thinking with you early on, so you can see how a design is developing and feed into it while everything is still flexible.
From those initial sketches through to detailed construction drawings, the level of detail increases at each stage of the project. What begins as a loose idea is gradually resolved into a fully considered, buildable design.
We review proposals with you throughout and incorporate your feedback as we go. This staged approach keeps you involved at every key decision, avoids surprises, and means the design that reaches site is one you have helped shape and fully understand.
Our role does not end once planning permission is granted. We stay involved right through construction, because the quality of a finished building depends on the detail being carried through on site.
We carry out regular site inspections, monitor workmanship and quality, and administer the build contract. Staying close to the work allows us to resolve issues quickly, protect the integrity of the design, and make sure the finished building lives up to what was promised on paper.
Working closely with clients, consultants and local authorities is critical to every project we take on. The best results come from strong relationships and open communication across the whole team.
We pride ourselves on being approachable, down to earth and proactive. Whether we are talking through ideas with a client, coordinating with engineers and other consultants, or working with a planning authority, we aim to make the process as straightforward and positive as possible.
